Ribbit
Hello! Yes, I know - I really suck for disappearing. Excuses are lame, but I’ll give a brief explanation. I got really sick. I even had to miss a business trip to Vegas. As if the sickness wasn’t bad enough, it led to laryngitis, which was torturous.
I didn’t do anything creative at all while I was sick, but I did consume other people’s creativity. I read a fabulous book which I enjoyed immensely, Eat, Pray, Love. - I know, that was so last year, but I just got around to it, and I’m so glad I did. Andy also ended up getting sick and we watched a ton of movies together. We saw at least eight movies. Five of which we loved!
Golden Compass - we liked it until the terrible non-ending ruined it.
The Other Boleyn Girl - decent.
Goya’s Ghosts - weird.
Here are the ones we loved
Penelope - cute
O Brother, Where Art Thou? - fun, happy movie.
In Bruges - sick, twised, gross - we loved it!
Death at a Funeral - Absolutely hilarious! - Maybe my new favorite movie
I am David - Touching. Loved it.
Once I finally started feeling better I started a Baby Surprise Jacket for a cousin’s baby. Here’s an example that a Ravelry user made:
I don’t know about you, but I have a really hard time deciphering Elizabeth Zimmermann’s patterns. I have to first say that she was a total genius. But to me, her patterns require a ton of intuition to follow them. It’s not easy to know exactly what she wants you to do. Thank god for Ravelry. I joined the BSJ group and found a great row-by-row break down. The only problem with that break down is that it tells you to make the 5 button holes, continue across, and repeat the button holes. I blindly complied, and now I have button holes on both sides of my jacket. !? So, don’t do that part if you use those notes. I think I might sew in a zipper to make up for it. I will finish it up soon, and post some pics =)
8/13/08 addendum:
This morning I received my emailed Vogue Knitting newsletter, with some very relevant quotes by Elizabeth Zimmermann that answer my last paragraph and remind us why she is so loved among knitters.
“I deliberately keep my knitting notes vague, because tastes vary, and your brains are as good as mine anyway.” - The Opinionated Knitter
And as for my plans to sew in a zipper…
“I don’t like zippers in sweaters, but many recipients insist, so I give in…I sew them in neatly, by hand, on the right side, muttering to myself.” – The Opinionated Knitter
Hehe. Elizabeth lives on.
