I wanted to showcase Lydia Dekker of Horrible Sweet, and her Nylon Beings, because I feel that her pieces exemplify creativity and innovation. I hope that her story of branching out and experimenting with different mediums will inspire you to also try new things in your art and crafts.

How did you come to specialize in making the nylon beings?

-Two years after finishing art school my art was not getting bigger and better. I decided that I was better off making something entirely different. I started making baby clothes. A friend of mine liked the clothes and asked me if I would like to exhibit them. When I was working out the ideas of ways how to exhibit the clothes, I made a doll. The doll turned out very nice and I enjoyed making her so much that I quit making the clothes and started a line of dolls. The idea to make dolls out of nylon panties popped in to my head and the first Nylon Being was made.

What inspires you to make your nylon beings so creepy/horrible (awesome) looking?

-The first Nylon Being just happened, and the first one is the inspiration for all the others. At first I did not see the creepiness off them; I found they looked like cute mutant potatoes.Because of the reaction from the people that I showed my creations, I found out that they are not so adorable looking after all!

Do you make other kinds of art or crafts?

-I am working on a big installation inspired by the Nylon Being’s and I just started making dolls out of air hardening clay.

Lydia lives in the Netherlands near the city Utrecht. If any of Stitchify’s readers have the opportunity to visit that area, Lydia recommends that you visit the ACU, a political café. They have concerts, show movies, host poetry nights, serve fantastic vegan food, and much more.

Thanks, Lydia!

Exactly–my first reaction was “aieee!” and then I kept looking and it changed to “well… some of them are really quite cute….”
