Burda Stylie

Feb 29th

Here’s a little treat for you sew-it-yourself fashionistas:

Burdastyle.com

Which is billed as a, “virtual sewing circle, an open-source hub of ideas, expertise, and amazing patterns you can download and sew at home”. It’s kind of like a community-driven wiki-sewing. The owners of the site are, “the first established pattern publisher to release its designs without copyrights, allowing members of the public to market their BurdaStyle creations in limited editions”. That’s pretty amazing.

Burda has a bunch of really cool patterns; authored by Burja Style itself and members of their community. Some are free, some aren’t, but still pretty cheap. The pattern for this skirt is by Burja Style, and is FREE. Isn’t it Zexy!?

Once you pick a pattern you like, you can see a gallery of members’ interpretations (click “View Creations”). For example:

You get to see pictures of the members’ creations, and a lot of times they will also provide tips/shortcuts/things to watch out for that they discovered while sewing a pattern.

They also have a bunch of technique tutorials and a “sewpedia”.

Not only is Burda Style’s output cool, they also share the empowering/community/forward-thinking ideals as Etsy, “Not only can BurdaStyle members upload their Etsy-mini shop onto their personal homepage- but we like to think that both BurdaStyle and Etsy are in the business of using new technology to drive old-fashioned craft. BurdaStyle is a celebration of the handmade and the heartfelt, the individual and idiosyncratic things we make ourselves, and is intended as a platform for experts and beginners alike”. Isn’t that fab?

They have over 38 freaking thousand members, so there is lots of creative juices pumping over at Burdastyle, for your schnuffling pleasure. Go take a peep.

PS: That middle model has a sewing blog that goes really deep into sewing. Looks really interesting.
